Kris
Kringle-Adopt-A-Family Program
Thanksgiving weekend begins the
Kris Kringle Adopt-A-Family program. Cards with the first
names of over 50 families, their assigned numbers, and gift
wish lists, hang on the Christmas tree outside the sanctuary,
available for congregation members to adopt for Christmas.
Schaumburg Township provides the names. A $25 food certificate
is suggested as one gift. When you choose a family, write
your name and phone number on the poster board beside the
Christmas tree, next to the family's number. Sometimes,
more than one church congregation family will adopt a single
family from the tree. Or, sometimes committees or other
groups will adopt a family.
Once
the family names are removed from the tree in the narthex,
it becomes the Mittee Tree,
and is then redecorated with hats, gloves, mittens, and
scarves that are collected the Sunday before Christmas and
given to the Schaumburg Food Pantry for distribution to
needy people.
There is a Christmas party in Fellowship Hall for the adopted
families, where the gifts are distributed and a light meal
offered. Santa attends this party and distributes the gifts
and other toys to the families and children. Helping out
with this party is a great way to participate in the AAF
program even if you were not able to adopt a family from
the tree.
The
Church and Society Committee
sponsors this activity.
