Greater
Woodfield Crop Walk:
Sunday, October 19, 2003
Usually
held on a week-end in October, the Crop Walk is a time
to get together and do a part to fight world hunger. Together
people can make a difference! Registration starts at 1:00
PM, and the walk begins at 1:30. While it begins and ends
at OSUMC, many other churches and service groups around
the northwest suburbs participate in this "Greater
Woodfield" event.
Of
the money raised, 25% stays in our community. It is usually
split between the Kenneth Young Center and two local P.A.D.S.
sites. There is also a canned food collection, divided
among local food pantries.
For
more information, Crop Walk has a Web
site.

Why
CROP WALK?
Because
of 30 young girls ranging in age from 4 to 13 - who have
been rescued from life on the streets of Maputo, Mozambique.
The southern African country of Mozambique is recovering
from a brutal 13-year civil war that left many children
orphans and many widows unable to care for their children.
These girls were found by local churches and brought to
the street girl's project of Church World Service partner,
the Christian Council of Mozambique. Thanks to CROP WALK
and other gifts, CCM has been able to purchase and outfit
a modest home in a very poor section of the capital, Maputo,
providing sanctuary, school and home for the girls.
When
asked by Northern New England CWS/CROP Regional Director
Bill Wildey "Why only thirty?" CCM officials
replied, "Because we don't have enough money to help
any more." There are many more girls and boys all
alone, trying to survive on the streets who could be helped.
