Pastor David Lagos-Fonseca
Rev. David Lagos-Fonseca was born and raised in Chile. Pastor David received his M. Div. degree at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL. He has a Bachelor of Arts in English teaching from the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile. He speaks fluent Spanish and English.
Pastor David is married to Rev. Shirley Pulgar-Hughes. They have a thirty-one-year old daughter, Carris, who is their pride and joy. Pastor David comes from a family of eight brothers and sisters. All his family lives in Southern Chile.
Pastor David’s first call was at Chicago Lawn UMC, in Chicago. (1998-2001). From there he was called to First UMC in Wilmington, IL . He and his wife co-pastored the church for seven years (2001-2008). Pastor David and his wife continued working as co-pastors serving Cary UMC for five years (2008-2013). In 2014, Pastor David was appointed to serve The Chicago Temple as an Associate Pastor (2014-2016). And since 2016 Pastor David has been ministering and serving his current congregation, Our Saviour’s United Methodist Church in Schaumburg, IL.
Pastor David’s call to serve the Body of Christ is regardless of their ethnic origin, race, gender orientation, sexual orientation, beliefs, age, physical and economic conditions. He affirms and values people’s gifts and talents; dignity and worth. He values congregational diversity. He is passionate about working for justice, reconciliation, and peace. Pastor David is committed to advancing biblical and theological education at every level within the local church. He believes in the priesthood of all believers. He is committed to helping and empowering people to live out their call to faithful discipleship in their communities. He is also passionate about missions, local and abroad.
Pastor David has served the Northern Illinois Conference through the Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns; Annual Conference Committee; the Task Force on Immigration; the Latino Ministry Center Advisory Board; Harvest 2020 Conference Leadership Team; Board of Directors of JFON (Justice for Our Neighbors), Trustee of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Pastor David currently serves the Elgin District Committee on Ordained Ministry (DCOM).
Pastor David is an outdoors person. He is a bird watcher and photographer. He also likes to ride his bicycle for long rides. He likes listening to all kinds of music; baking bread; gardening; climbing, playing ping pong, cutting trees, and dismantling anything electronic, just for the fun of it. He enjoys long walks with his seven-year-old dog, a pug named “Wally.” Pastor David enjoys family meals. He loves to have dessert first before any meal. He loves dark chocolate, cherries, chocolate cookies, cake and more cake.
